Mars Explorers everywhere precipitated into darkness

This Document originally posted in the "Mars Explorer" Group

The CEO of Unity contacted me this morning to let me know that, unfortunately, the beta master list server that Unity's lead networking developer had set up on their main webserver would need to be taken down before it crashed their system for the third time.

So now - with their central communications hub severed, lone copies of Mars Explorer are drifting aimlessley about the internet, unable to find each other.

Mars Explorer was designed to survive. Power surges, list server terminations, bots assimilating WikiPedia and becoming self aware; even all of the above at the same time - are no match for a dedicated community backed by a haphazardly vigilant programmer :)

You can save Mars Explorer!
All you need to do is activate the "Alternate List Server" option while playing.
From the central server list window - click the "Game Settings" button, click the "Use Alternate List Server" option, and everything should be back to normal.

Of course, this isn't a long term fix - I hope to release a new version tomorrow which will use the alternate list server by default. Unfortunatley, this will need to be circulated as widely as possible for obvious reasons - which means that it will be a "final" release, and that all the 1.9 noobs will catch up with us again...
I am still considering the best solution to this problem, but I think we have at least a partial answer with the integrated player registration and server eviction mechanisms that have been introduced in the beta series.

I had planned to continue the beta series until 2.0 was released - at which time I would launch a shock-and-awe campaign upon an unsuspecting world and simultaneously open for donations - but I suppose that a slightly less dramatic course of action will now have to be pursued :)

Have a great evening everyone,

-Aubrey

P.S. On a separate, but no less exciting front - after being practically offline for around a week now due to the heartlessness and FAP policy of WildBlue, my satellite internet service provider (sorry if I didn't answer anyone!) - it looks like a plan to install low latency, Mars Explorer friendly radio internet at my headquarters may be successful... If I can get radio internet, it would mean a huge deal for Mars Explorer, and the ATI Network in general!

Using the alternate server isn't an alternate fix, but that is up to Unity is it not? Do you have any idea whether and when this problem will be fixed by Unity's staff?
PS. Does radio internet mean no more port 2500 forwarding, firewall downshutting and multiple copies running will become a thing of the past?

Unity's lead networking developer set up the beta list server that Mars Explorer currently defaults to in the process of helping me and several others work around a major issue with their standard list server, which is still online. Unity had to take the beta list server offline today, as it was straining their main webserver (which it was running on) so much that their webserver had crashed several times today...

I haven't yet been able to confirm that the issue has been fixed in their standard list server, but I am currently running my own list server - which Mars Explorer treats as the "alternate".

I plan to build an "autolistersverlist" update functionality into the version about to be released, which should forever solve this type of issue going forward - as Mars Explorer will check for updated list servers when checking for new game versions at startup.

There are certain situations where manual port forwarding configuration is needed - but with radio internet, I could actually test Mars Explorer like it is meant to be played - and diagnose networking difficulties with ease instead of endless frustration :)

Yes, I had a feeling that was what it was for, and tried it - unfortunately, no one was on it either...  Thank you for the information! I find a final release both frightening, and exiting, I am rather curious as to the effects of having noobs pouring in and testing out new boot system. As much as  I try to be on their side, too much at a time is too much at a time. I will filter through and allow the most decent of the noobs.... Either way, I look forwards to tomorrow...... In a sad, and exquisite way...

As for the unity site crashing - I wondered when I was searching for a fix to my "Tangent velocity" problem in a particle emitter, and suddenly I could not view anything at all! It seems lately the internet (or at least the parts that I most commonly surf) have been having many issues. Again thank you for explaining to us!

Hi Aubrey,

Player registration and the Evict Player feature have been more than "a partial answer". They have made a huge difference in gaming pleasure.
Some of us don't fear integration with the 1.9 players as much as it may seem. There are still some good people stuck in 1.9 due to the complexity of describing (via the in-game text box ) how to access new versions plus, the real criminals will be fun to evict.  :)

Thanks for this update and btw, 1.97 is already "shock and awe" so pat yourself on the back ok?

Kruncher, I love your positive attitude on this! I do look forwards to some booting ):] I also look forwards to experimenting with keeping noobs reasonable... ANd being reasonable with them. PLUS! I can finally Pawn them too! ):] (host cam bug, it is too tedious to fix every whimsical day I actually want to be on 1.9)

thanx a lot aubrey (not sarcastic :J)!!! procrastination wasnt easy without the game 2day!!! ps. INTERNET RADIO!!! WHADDID I SAY!!! THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT WE NEED!!! correct me if im wrong, but this means the host, or other players could play or suggest their own music!!! i 4 one say we should have a "jukebox" like feature, where a player can suggest a song, and the host can play that, or a song of his/her choice! good idea eh? ya i know it is!!! (u do too!)

My solution to noobs is a friend list. It doesn't have to compete with any site such as myspace or facebook, it is to keep peace instead. It would be like a master coded server list. You would click a box by each friends name meaning that they may be included in a private server, no code needed. All people checked off may join your game and them only, you can send them a notification saying "-Has sent a request for you to join his private game" or something. It may also include the ability to only see games they are in or hosting. My main problem with a rapid flow of 'annoyances' is that fact that the good players have to hide from the bad ones, hardly seems fair to me. And also, there is about 50 servers to 50 players all with absurd titles to shift through, making it impossible to find friends. Until then, i'll be  hiding in Antarctica ;)

Satellite Internet: Home satellite dish connects with satellite dish orbiting earth, which then connects with the internet provider.

Radio Internet: Home connection system sends data to a radio tower, not unlike those used for a radio station (via radio station), which connects to, or is, the internet provider.

Cable internet: Cables split from the home, and travel thousands of miles alongside electrical lines to the internet provider.

Almost all of you people would fail my Dad's test. You see, he was a High School teacher and became frustrated with his student's unwillingness to read instructions and/or pay attention. It was a 20 question test and at the top, in the instructions, it said: "Read all the questions before beginning this test." Welp, question 17 said: "Leave the entire page blank and bring it to my desk immediately.".....
Oh yeah. He insisted that all students use a pen...

anyway, why not just say that us good/famous people should put our names on the forum. It shouldn't be a rule, but all people who want others to join their server should do this, as non-named servers will only attract noobs. Us "famous" forum particepators ( ivé probably seen another post from most of you people) can join each other's servers, knowing that there won't be zero gravity, or a MOOOOOOGLE (looking at elmo here) is around th corner to greet us.
